Artist In Residency: Isabelle Michaud

Isabelle Michaud is The Sault Ste. Marie Museum's inaugural artist in residence! A Francophone artist with an interest in local French history and museum aesthetics, Michaud received her BFA from Algoma University where she is currently a French professor. She has exhibited and curated across Ontario, with recent solo shows at 180 Projects and Blind River Timber Village Museum.  Isabelle has received several artist grants from the Ontario Arts Council for personal and collaborative projects.

Isabelle's residency with the museum involved engaging members of the local Francophone community to map out cultural presence and erasure. Sites of exploration included a discontinued French language newspaper (Les Rives), the Dionne Quintuplets, the former "French Quarter" neighbourhood, and the language crisis of 1990. Isabelle used mixed media including artist-books, paintings, installation, assemblage and video drawing from collections materials, local geography, and regional Francophone history. Her work supplements the museum's French cultural collections, contextualized by stories and experiences of exclusion/belonging.
This residency culminated in an exhibition titled "Une Balade à French Town / Walking French Town".
Inaugural Program at the Museum Explores History of French Community
Exhibition "Une Balade
à French Town" Open March 25th - June 30th 2021.
