Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma, your community museum wants to hear from you!
The past few months have been trying and uncertain for all of us. Individuals, families, and groups in our communities have been impacted uniquely by the COVID-19 pandemic and surrounding crises. The Sault Ste. Marie Museum’s commitment is to collecting and preserving community history, and we feel it is necessary to capture, share and preserve the varied local stories of this historical moment.
We are asking people in Sault Ste. Marie & the Algoma District areas to reflect and share their stories of this historic moment and imagine a vision for our community’s future. There are many ways to contribute, some might include:
Create a cardboard model of your home, a local site or landmark.
Create a model of an imagined place that represents what you want to see in the future.
Create an artor craft project that responds to the promptsbelow.
There is no emphasis on artistic quality or style. Anyone can join in!
Some guiding prompts to respond to might be:
What do you want to see for our community post-pandemic?
What have you been doing during this period?
What are your hopes for the future?
Where have you spent most of this time?
Where do you miss going? Where do you wish you could spend this time?
We want to make it easy, accessible and safe for you to share with us!
We will provide (free) materials to folks who would like supplies (contact us)
We will organize several (free) workshops, both physical and virtual opportunities to participate.
We will share examples of possible approaches to help spark inspiration.
We can help folks create works that share their story by working one-on-one, in person or virtually, with anyone who would like assistance (contact us).
We will team up with local organizations who work with/in the many social and cultural groups that make up our diverse community.
There is no deadline. Participate when you feel ready and comfortable.
For those who want to contribute in another format, we are collecting videos, hand-made signs, journals and diaries as part of our COVID Rapid Response Collection.
Materials kits, templates and physical submission forms are available at the Sault Ste. Marie Museum and at partner sites. We can arrange contact-free pickup – just call us to set-up!
