SUMMARY
The Sault Ste. Marie Museum is seeking a dynamic museum professional to serve as Executive Director & Curator.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director & Curator is responsible for all facets of the day-to-day operations of the Sault Ste. Marie Museum (SSM Museum) with emphasis on curatorial duties and public relations, marketing and social media platform development.
The Sault Ste. Marie Museum is a non-profit, charitable organization facilitated by the Sault Ste. Marie & 49th Field Regiment R.C.A. Historical Society for the citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma, as well as visitors to the community. The Executive Director & Chief Curator will be seen as the public face of the SSM Museum and as such must be a self-starter that represents the best interests of the organization across the community.
A strong candidate will be a leader in museum management, and have excellent interpersonal, strategic, analytical, and communication skills. They will demonstrate experience in effective fundraising, and managing a high performing team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administration:
- Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Museum, including best business practices, sustainability and growth.
- Responsible for staff management and providing strong leadership in deployment of staff and volunteer resources in a cost efficient and effective manner.
- Responsible for the development and training of an effective team of staff and volunteers.
- Responsible for the day-to-day financial management of the Museum with emphasis on creating and administering effective budgets.
- Responsible for all report and grant writing.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of a flexible fundraising plan.
- Responsible for overseeing membership development and growth.
- Responsible for developing short and long-term strategic plans with the Board of Directors.
- Responsible for all aspects of the Museum’s collection.
- Responsible for following all relevant Ministry Standards related to the care and preservation of the collection.
- Responsible for developing a schedule of annual exhibits, including travelling exhibitions.
- Responsible for training and supervision of staff and volunteers working with the collection.
- Responsible for researching artifacts and the development of interpretive text, signage and graphics in conjunction with Museum staff.
- Responsible for advancement of community partnerships and projects.
- Responsible for overseeing exhibition installation.
- Responsible for the development and presentation of the Museum’s continuously enhanced value proposition to all stakeholders.
- Responsible for developing and maintaining close working relationships with community groups, local artists, organizations, and community members.
- Responsible for the ongoing administration of a marketing plan, and liaising with the media, local officials, and leaders of other museums and galleries to promote the highest level of awareness of the SSM Museum in the community and district.
- Responsible for implementing the Museum’s Social Media Plan and the ongoing monitoring and modification required to maintain and enhance its effectiveness.
- Completion of a university degree in Museum and/or Heritage Management or equivalent; graduate level is an asset.
- Must have a minimum of three years of experience working within the museum and/or heritage sectors (can include volunteer work/internships).
- Experience in Museum curatorial work and administration, including exhibition development, catalogue publishing, and collections management required.
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with a team.
- Have the ability to effectively supervise, direct, coach, and coordinate staff.
- Demonstrated ability in successful grant writing applications and reporting at the municipal, provincial, and federal level.
- Have the ability to exercise considerable independence of judgement, action, tact, and initiative in performing the work.
- Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Demonstrated knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal museum operating standards.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet (or other similar software programs).
- Have experience in strategic planning, forecasting and financial management, fundraising/grant writing, team building, and working with a non-profit charitable Board of Directors.
- Experience with PastPerfect Museum Software is an asset.
- Training in the governance of not-for-profit organizations.
- Member of Canadian Museums Association (CMA) and/or Ontario Museum Association (OMA) preferred.
- Firearm possession and acquisition license (PAL) is an asset.
- A valid Province of Ontario “G” driver’s license with access to a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.
