Community Stories: Our Neighbourhoods

The Sault Ste. Marie Museum is undertaking a project to create and develop informative exhibition pieces regarding the various neighbourhoods and their development, alongside the development of Sault Ste. Marie as a community. We will be creating these pieces for all the neighbourhoods identifiable in Sault Ste. Marie. We aim to allow for our community to better engage with our local history, including significant developments and important people who made Sault Ste. Marie the city we live in today.

To start; we will be looking at the Harris and Buckley Neighbourhood!

This neighbourhood includes First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Ave, Connaught Ave, Devon Rd, Dovercourt Rd, Douglas St and is bordered by
Wallace Terrace, Korah Road and Goulias Ave . Landmarks include the former David Kyle School (now park), St. Veronica's Church and the former Douglas Street church.

We are asking the community to share and/or donate historical records (census data, immigration records, land records etc.), photographs, video footage, and any other information to assist us in capturing these full stories. If you do not wish to donate the original documents or photos, the Sault Museum is happy to scan and make copies of the original artifacts to preserve for our collection.

If you do not have physical artifacts, we are also collecting oral histories. If you have memories of these neighbourhoods, we want to hear and preserve them for future generations!
